# The Last Lantern of Vael

A short fragment from the borderlands, where the old magic is dying and the ones who tend it have secrets of their own.

The lantern-keeper of Vael lit the last flame at dusk, as her mother had, and her mother's mother before her. The fog rolled down from the Hollow Hills the way it always did, slow and patient, and the village shuttered its windows against whatever walked inside it.

"You should not be out here," said a voice behind her.

She did not turn. She had known he would come. Some part of her had been waiting since the first frost, when the crows left the eastern wood all at once.

> Every flame is a promise, her mother had said. Every promise has a price.

"Then name yours," she said, and lifted the lantern so that its light fell on his face.
